You know how difficult it is to go into Time Out Market Lisbon and choose what you are going to eat. You always want to try new things, but that means not order a dish you know and love. To avoid doubt, we’ve put together for you a list of 10 must-try dishes.
Shrimp bao from Confraria
The prawn bao is one of the Confraria’s novelties this summer, joining their salmon taco, vegetable tempura and sushi combinations. A traditional item from China, the bao is a kind of fluffy steamed bun that can be filled with various ingredients, in this case prawn tempura, rocket, Japanese pickle and sauce. €4.90 each
Basil or melon ice cream from Gelato Davvero
Davvero ice creams are handmade, without colourings or preservatives, from the best ingredients, namely fresh fruit, fresh milk and cream, and natural stabilisers. For summer they have lots of fresh flavours such as basil, melon and watermelon, but without ever dropping classics such as pistachio or ricotta with walnuts and honey, or even moer recent additions such as pastel de nata (custard tart).
Mariscada Azul seafood platter from Marisqueira Azul
Freshness is the middle name of Marisqueira Azul – all the seafood served by this restaurant is carefully selected from the best Portuguese suppliers. On a visit to their outlet in the Market, choosing can be difficult, so the best option is to opt for the Mariscada Azul, a kind of ‘best of’ dish that enables you to try a bit of everything. It features clams, stuffed crab, barnacles, razor clams, oysters, prawns and mussels, and costs €85.
Clams à Pinóquio from Pinóquio
The Pinóquio cervejaria (beer hall), a city favourite since 1982, in 2020 brought into the Market many of the dishes that have won over generations of locals, such as the steamed clams that become one of the main reasons to make a pilgrimage to the place, along with their pica-pau marinated strips of sirloin steak with sliced chips or the roast grouper head. €17
Tempura sardines with roast vegetables from Marlene Vieira
At chef Marlene Vieira’s restaurant there is a different dish every day to keep you interested. Monday is the most difficult day of the week for most people, so the chef has just updated the dish of the day to suit the season. As it is the season for sardines, Monday’s dish is sardines in tempura with roast vegetables. Dish of the day €10.90.
LemonStruck cocktail from Time Out Bar
The art of making cocktails often resembles gastronomic methods, with recipes are followed to create flavours and sensations. The idea for this new cocktail from the Time Out Bar’s summer collection came from a well-known Thai dish, green curry. So do not be surprised if you taste citronella, green chilli, ginger, basil and coconut in the LemonStruck cocktail, as it has been named, to which are added vodka, Amaro herbal liqueur, Falernum syrup and elderflower liqueur, among other things. It is the most citric cocktail on the menu and therefore perfect for summer. €13
Gazpacho à Pap’açorda with fried gobies from Pap’Açôrda
It may not be the main reason to visit Pap’Açôrda – after all, there are so many. But when the heat is on, preferences quickly shift from heavy dishes such as arroz de cabidela to lighter options like this gazpacho à Pap’Açôrda with fried chanquetes (tiny transparent gobies) or other seasonal favourites such as breaded sardines and sardine rice. €12.50
Steak tartare from Café de São Bento
If it is the best steak in town you’re after, look no further. The one at Café de São Bento came out top in a vote organised by Time Out Lisboa. The meat is both thick and tender and the special sauce, made with butter, salt and the meat’s juices, is perfect for dipping the chips that come with it. But the Café de São Bento is not only famous for classic steak: the quality of its meat can also be seen in their steak tartare – minced sirloin, seasoned as tradition dictates, and served with toasted bread. €15
Cataplana from Sea Me
A traditional Algarve dish, the cataplana was one of the latest additions to the Sea Me menu in the Market. It was brought in for the Time Out Market’s 10th anniversary and has stayed on since. This cataplana is made with fresh fish and shellfish of the day, potatoes, onions, peppers and coriander. €19
Lobster burger from Ground Burger
Summer calls for seafood, but it does not always come in the most classic form. This lobster burger from Ground Burger is a trend imported from the United States that combines a brioche bun with fresh lobster on top of a burger made with 100% Black Angus beef, and a sauce with beurre noisette (brown butter), celery mayonnaise with chilli, lime zest and chives. €29.95
